I know it is has been a while since I last updated Unspooled - a freaking awesome movie blog if there ever was one.  Hey, better later than never.  I will not apologize because tough guys don't do that.  Am I saying I am a tough guy?  I am only saying that in my efforts to emulate the coolest people on the silver screen, I should not apologize.  Cool Dudes are merely understood; they never explain.

The point of today's post is really about Netflix? How long must I stubbornly look at a film that has been checked out and sitting on my desk now for six months?  Yes, here and there, I do the instant To TV thing, and the wife likes the occasional documentary, but really, with RedBox, On Occasional Demand Comcast,  and discount DVD bins, where does Netflix ultimately fit in?

Unspooled: Titanic - A Tale of Two Movies PDF Print E-mail

I sat through Titanic with the family the other day.  It's been a while since I saw it and I thought maybe I should give it a fresh chance since it is now properly distanced from the hoopla that surrounded its initial release in 1997. I wasn't much into romantic epics at the time, and I am not now.  But, this movie does feature a major shipwreck, so it has that built in appeal.

James Cameron's Titanic is the classic Hollywood blockbuster for sure.  Perhaps it is even the Gone With the Wind of 1990s (I don't think we had one for the 2000s).  It is a very chic flick movie for the most part and hence I am not going to really give the full CoolFilmz treatment or look at it from that angle.  This movie is an orange and we review apples.

Still, I love history and on that note Titanic is a great historical film.  Plus, I love to see big stuff go down, blow up, explode, catch on fire.  In that regards, Titanic scores very well.  Except, you have to wait patiently until all the girls have all the fun with the love story, which dominates the first half of the film.

A good friend of mine summed it up perfectly.  The first half of the movie is for the women.  The second half is for guys.  I would have to agree.  Now, in terms of how I feel about the movie overall, I am reminded of Joe Pesci in Goodfellas when they were discussing how good a certain singer was and he said, "The man's a good singer.  Let's leave it at that."

Titanic is a good movie.  Let's leave it at that.

Yesterday I sat through Eclipse on the big silver screen.  The biggest question I have: where do I mail my man card? Of lesser concern are these questions: can someone pound a stake through my heart? Shoot me with a silver screen bullet?  I might ask one of these vampires in the movie to do so, but they might just kiss me instead.

I grew up in the day and age of video stores (wow, that dates me big time).  Whereas I used to have all the time in the world to peruse shelves of movies and going to the video store was sort of an event unto itself, I am now reduced to RedBox at the end of the check out line at my local grocery store.  Then, there is the RedBox outside of this grocery store near this gym I go to.  You have to brave the elements to get a movie at that one.  Am I now relegated to picking out movies while bird's shit on me?  Is this what it has come too?

Dear CoolFilmz Friends,

I am conducting an informal survey to determine a CoolFilmz Legends hit parade list.  This list will, in theory, determine the coolest actors of all time.
Link to survey: CoolFilmz Legends Survey

This email is the first survey and it contains a sampling of 10 actors.  Please, if you will, rate them with “Ace” being the best and “Joker” the worst.

Every couple weeks or so, I will send out another batch of 10 Actors.   I encourage you to forward the hell out of this email.  A link to the survey will also be available on the Web site.
