As police detective Aiden Breslin (Dennis Quaid) struggles to maintain a bond with this two sons following the death of his wife, he finds himself immersed into an investigation of a series of horrific murders. The veteran detective closes in on the investigation and connects the killings to the Biblical prophecy of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. In this film's failed attempt to create suspense, Breslin discovers a chilling, yet predicable, connection between himself and the suspects. This "shocking" connection is anything but and it becomes clear well before the plot unfolds on screen.
This film attempts to give us the perfect mix of an edge-of-your-seat suspense, such as "Seven," and a grotesque horror flick, like "Saw." It fails on both attempts. I didn't feel completely cheated out of my five bucks for the rental but let's just say the slice of Saboro's pizza that I had at the Philadelphia airport today was more interesting. There is an attempt to give us some plot twists but those twists get lost somewhere between the shitty dialog and poor acting. Dennis Quaid is the best of a bad lot in this cheap imitation of a suspense / horror film. Quaid won't be collecting any hardware for this performance but he is solid, nonetheless. The only other performance of note is given by Ziyi Zhang in her role as Kristen, one of the four suspects. Perhaps the most shocking aspect of this film is that Quaid, one of my personal favorites, agreed to such a horrid script. Take Quaid out of the mix and this one is a "Joker" for sure. With him I'll mercifully give it a "Jack."
